CHAIRMAN ALEX STREET
INTRODUCTION
The Section-8 Program
was created as part of the Housing and Community Development Act of
1974, which rectified the U.S. Housing Act of 1937. The Act
has been amended from time to time, and its requirements, as they
apply to the Section-8 Voucher Program.
Administration of the
Section-8 Program and the functions and responsibilities of the
Housing Authority (HA) staff shall be in compliance with the HA's
Personnel Policy and the Department of Housing and Urban
Development's (HUD) Section-8 Regulations as well as all Federal,
State and local Fair Housing Laws and Regulations.
LOCAL
OBJECTIVES
The Section-8 Program is
designed to achieve three major objectives:
- To provide decent,
safe, and sanitary housing for very low income families while
maintaining their rent payments at an affordable level.
- To promote freedom
of housing choice and spatial deconcentration of very low income
families of all races and ethnic backgrounds.
- To provide an incentive
to private property owners to rent to very low income families by
offering timely assistance
payments.
In addition, the HA has the
following goals for the program:
- To assist the
local economy by increasing the occupancy rate and the amount of
money flowing to the community.
- To encourage self
sufficiency of participant families.
ITS TIME FOR A BIT OF
HISTORY!
The Maywood Housing
Authority (MHA), was created in October 1946, by a Resolution under
the Village of Maywood. In January 1976, the Board called
the very first meeting for the organization of business and Adopted
the Original By-Laws.
Leasing of the
initial Section-8 Certificates came in the year of 1977.
Since that time the Voucher Program was adopted, and now the
two programs has emerged into The Housing Choice
Voucher.
FUNCTIONS OF
MHA
MHA currently assists a
total of 448 families under its Housing Choice Voucher Program,
which is fully leased and administered in the Maywood
area. Our most recent waiting list holds an
approximate two year waiting period for families to receive
assistance.
Although, we currently are
not accepting applications for the program. Families are always
encouraged to stay in touch to find out about in upcoming
information that we might have regarding housing
opportunities.

THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GWENDOLYN ROBINSON
I would like to
thank the Board of Commissioners for allowing me the
opportunity to do what I Love best, serving the Community. The
Maywood Housing Authority is not a job for me but so much more, in
our daily lives sometimes we never think about the difference we
make when someone need shelter or food or sometimes just a word that
you can make it.
Housing families is important but sometimes
that's not all that is needed. I will always continue to strive for
further advancement for low-income people in the
neighborhood.
